AI Assistant vs. Search Engine

Are Bing and Google paving their way to self-destructing with the introduction of Copilot and Gemini? Will AI Replace Search Engines?

Today, AI is making technological breakthroughs that seemed distant a few years ago or were just movie tropes. Whether it’s writing intricate lines of code for a website or app, generating hyperrealistic visual representations of historical moments that were never captured, effortlessly composing SEO-optimized articles in mere minutes, generating countless personalized video variations from a single sample, resurrecting the voices of departed singers to breathe life into new songs, or even replacing new anchors from TV channels, the possibilities are limitless.

No industry has been left untouched by the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, yet none has seen an influx of AI Tools as profoundly as information technology and the marketing industry. While we’ve grown accustomed to voice assistants like Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant, Alexa, and Bixby, which use underpowered AI.

Now the AI game has been taken to a whole new level with the arrival of dynamic AI chat assistants like Chat GPT, along with the exciting newcomers from search engine giants Copilot (earlier known as Bing Chat) and Gemini (earlier known as Google Bard). With these AI assistants, get ready to witness a quantum leap in AI-powered chat interactions that will make your conversations confident and entertaining!

These chat assistants are everything current search engines are and more.

AI chat assistants vs search engines

Which brings a big question should we still use Google, Bing, or any Search Engine when we can get results in a more human-like language?

What does the rise of AI assistants mean for the future of search engines? The debate of AI versus humans has taken a backseat for SEOs; the real buzz right now is all about AI Assistants taking on Search Engines. And if we dive into the nitty-gritty, it’s the epic showdown of Copilot vs Bing and Gemini vs Google! Let us explore these AI assistants by Google and Bing and how they will revolutionize our search behavior.

The Goodbye Has Started: AI Chat Assistants Are Taking Over Search Engines!

AI Chat Assistants Are Taking Over Search Engines

For better or worse, AI assistants have made their intriguing debut and got massive early adopters. After all, an AI assistant GIVES you the “answers” to your question while a search engine tells WHERE TO FIND the answers. This difference might look meager on paper, but it was substantial enough for AI Assistants to replace Search Engines for lots of work.

AI assistants are being used for many purposes. Here are some examples of applications where they have replaced search engines:

Students Homework

Students are usually the most curious ones, and adopt new technology in its earliest phase. The same happened with this technology as well. They not explored it but also showed the path to the abilities the AI Assistants. Students are using AI assistants for — writing essays, completing assignments, writing research papers, and more.

These tools have been successful in creating engaging headlines. They also create a well-structured content framework. This helps to get work done quickly and efficiently.

This technology is still in its early experimentation phase and has limitations in fact-checking. As a result, using these tools to complete the whole work will lead to questions about its quality.

Coding Assistant

Coding assistants are gaining in popularity just like their chat counterparts. Some of the most widely used by engineers and designers include AlphaCode and OpenAI Codex, which are still in beta mode. Both tools seem to have some benefits, specifically OpenAI Codex, which is touted as being effective when doing any type of programming. Likewise, AlphaCode has performed impressively with claims that it can outdo its human counterparts in programming.

Nonetheless, both tools have their limitations as users have found that they might increase productivity and efficiency but can’t entirely replace humans. Plus, some issues need to be resolved regarding security and laws pertaining to intellectual property.

Writing Ideas

Using AI assistants for content and copywriting have its own set of perks and issues. On the surface, most AI assistants only require basic information about the topic, style, tone, headings and subheadings, keywords, and so forth. You first input the instructions, and then the tool generates a formatted article.

Another function of an AI assistant relates to creative writing across various genres. For instance, you can request song lyrics, a poem, or a short story. Again, you give the tool specific details about what you want, and in a few seconds, you have the finished product. And for more precise writing, Google has introduced “Help me write” in several Google products ranging from Gmail to Docs it utilizes AI capabilities of Gemini. On the other hand, Microsoft has integrated Copilot in Windows.

Content Comprehension

One of the most touted features of AI assistants has been the summarization of a webpage. Of course, you would expect these highly sophisticated tools to comprehend, if not analyze, the content. As an illustration, an AI assistant can summarize an entire article or even just a part of a page/article. Likewise, it can tell the user if the content is an ad or other type, along with an overview.

While this is an incredibly useful feature for grasping the essence of TLDR (Too Long; Didn’t Read) articles, it’s important to note that it’s not entirely foolproof. There is a possibility that certain parts of the content may be overlooked or that sarcasm and satire (if present in the article) may be misinterpreted. Nonetheless, the tool’s overall effectiveness remains commendable, aiding in quicker comprehension of lengthy texts.

AI vs Search Engine: What is the Current Situation?

While both AI assistants, Copilot and Gemini, come with their unique set of pros and cons, looking at how they stack up against the Search Engines will help you understand why search engines are falling behind in the AI vs. search engine battle.

The Reason Behind the Decline in Search Engine Popularity: It's Not Just About AI!

While the rise of AI undoubtedly plays a role, the underlying reasons behind the waning popularity of search engines run deeper. In the past, users were left without a worthy alternative, forcing them to tolerate the monopolistic nature of search engines, despite their inherent drawbacks and limitations.

Here are some problems with current search engines, particularly, Google, as it dominates global searches with more than 93% search engine market share in 2023*.

  • For popular keywords and competitive niches, most likely, you’ll see SERPs full of “sponsored” ads, where it takes 1-2 scrolls to reach the first organic result. Which may or may not yield the results that you were searching for.
Too many ads on SERP
  • Depending on the complexity of your search, you’ll receive a comprehensive list of results to explore, and in some cases, you might even check the second page. But let’s be honest, who really goes to the second page… it’s easier to modify search term than going on second page. Some believe that going beyond the first page of search results opens the portal of Upside Down — It’s not the lair of Demogorgon that awaits, but a haunting deterioration in the quality of information. Google understood the same and introduced infinite scrolling in its search engine results pages (SERP). However, users don’t visit search engines for endless scrolling; TikTok and Reels are already there for it.
  • Also, clicking on the top-ranking links in results doesn’t guarantee the best results or experience. Most of the top-ranking websites in SERP are full of pop-ups/affiliate links/sponsored content. This creates distrust in the SEO community regarding Google guidelines and algorithms, where they discourage these things, but results say otherwise. So, does Google practice what they preach?
  • Depending on your search query, you can expect to find the answer you’re looking for prominently displayed in Position Zero as a featured snippet, Knowledge Panel, or through engaging multimedia results. At least, that’s the case with Google. While this provides trustable information, it gets it’s share of controversy from time to time. Due to such controversy, Sundar Pichai had to testify before Congress and explain how Google’s search algorithms work, and no single person controls the SERP entirely.
Google search misinformation
  • If you’ve spent enough time on Google or other search engines, you might have noticed how some websites are always on top for specific industry-related queries. This pattern is more visible in Health, Travel, Shopping, and Finance. Such a recurring pattern raises questions if there’s such a limited number of experts for these industries.

How AI Assistants Are Solutions To These Problems

AI Assistants use things like LLM, NLP, Neural Networks, and Exabytes of data to provide the most accurate data in a human-like conversational manner. They also use data from websites present on the internet (real-time, unlike ChatGPT), so what search engines can find, their AI assistants can get hands-on too. Here’s how AI Assistants are one-upping search engines:

  • You can ask questions and get answers as if you are having a conversation with a human, and the AI assistants will return with clear and straightforward answers.
  • The inquiries are resolved through condensed and processed responses rather than a lengthy list of website links.
Like, if you ask for a code to build a website, they give you code, not a link to the website to generate code; this improves the turnaround time of getting work done instead of jumping from one site to another in search of answers. Not just codes, these assistants can also generate creative visuals (earlier, it was only Copilot, but now Gemini can do it too, after a recent update) and write poems and captions.
  • One of the best things right now about AI Assistants is that you can get all the information without any annoying sponsored links or pop-ups.
  • The one big complaint users had about AI assistants is the trustworthiness of the information, as Gemini did not cite the information source earlier, but that too has been fixed after a recent update after Google I/O. With it is a hit or miss in sources as sometimes it gives sources sometimes it doesn’t, but it can be fixed in the future.

All's Not Sunshine and Rainbows for AI Assistants

AI assistants have made its intriguing debut but not without controversy. Both Copilot and Gemini are still in their experimentation phase and have limitations.

Bard Limitation Error
Sometime the AI Assistants want you to be very specific about your question which search engine don’t

When it comes to homework, secondary teachers and college professors will still deal with the same age-old concern of academic integrity. But now with questioning whether the essay is the student’s actual work, they also have to worry about fact-checking. In the case of math problems, even ChatGPT is known for giving an incorrect solution. In the realm of science, the results that stem from employing an AI assistant are even more frightening.

For instance, data scientist, Teresa Kubacka, experimented with ChatGPT by asking about an imaginary concept related to physics (her focus when she obtained her Ph.D.). ChatGPT came back with a thorough explanation of the concept along with sources for its information… all of which were made up. Although the assistant listed actual scientists, the works that they supposedly wrote were imaginary.

The other side of this potential downside is that instructors can encourage their students to do their own fact-checking. This is a beneficial skill to learn, both in the classroom and outside of it.

Some people are using different teaching methods to avoid using AI. This technique is called “Flipping the Classroom”. In this method, students present their findings and explain their conclusions in a class discussion.

Similarly, the writing-assistant function may appear to be a dream-come-true for writers who want to ramp up content production and add more speed to their daily operations. But misinformation and the overall content quality are still not 100% trustable. In many cases, the output text still sounds too robotic or doesn’t comply with the user’s input.

Most importantly, Google can detect AI-generated content, which poses an issue to a website’s SEO and rankings. Recently many webmasters’ have seen a steep decline in website SERP rankings after a momentary rise, due to AI-generated content. But after recent update Google says, “appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines”. As AI becomes more commonplace, website owners and content creators/managers may become used to using it. However, with caution.

Old blog as GPT content 2023-04-24
This blog was written in May 2021 and ChatGPT is taking credit for it — What is this behavior GPT?

From what I have personally witnessed, ChatGPT has taken credit for the original work of our writer (even though this blog is not about ChatGPT, Bing Chat uses the same technology from OpenAI’s ChatGPT).

Recently AI-generated content has created problems for many –be it a writer, lyricists, musician, or engineer. AI voice training has advanced to the point where AI can now duplicate the voices of real artists. One example of this was when an AI-generated song was released that sounded just like the Canadian rapper Drake. However, this was not a real Drake song; it was created by AI trained on his voice.

AI-generated songs have been gaining popularity on the internet. These songs span a range of artists, from American rapper Eminem to demised Indian singer Sidhu Moose Wala.

These songs are gaining immense popularity, with millions of streams. However, they are also leading to legal issues. Singers and music labels are facing difficulties with respect to intellectual property rights.

All's Not Sunshine and Rainbows for AI Assistants

Does the rise of AI Assistants mean the end of SEO?

Before jumping to any conclusion —

  • Who will win in AI vs Search Engines?
  • What would be AI assistants’ impact on Search Engines?
  • Would the rise of AI assistants means the end of SERP and ultimately, SEO?
  • What is the future of search engines?

You should keep in mind that websites are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Even if we are asking questions from Copilot or Gemini, we need sources of that information to believe their answer. This is one of the primary reasons why Copilot results are more trustable than Gemini. Gemini used to skip sources in its results more often in past but it’s getting more consistent now.

These AI assistants are like Search Engines on steroids.

The rising number of internet users suggests the acceptance of people for online information and services is increasing. The same pattern can be seen with online shopping. There has been a sharp increase in eCommerce websites in the last three years, most likely due to the pandemic and customers willing to shop online. It also brought about the need to stay connected with interactive entertainment, educational resources, or other online services.

All these things involve human interaction, which is not going away anytime soon. Even these AI assistants are getting data from websites. And the websites with better SEO will have better chance of gaining the trust of AI assistants.

Regardless of how fervently we use Copilot and Gemini, we still visit websites to complete our purchase, fill out inquiry forms, do intense research, and more similar specific tasks.

With that said, SEO still proves to be a vital part of businesses and getting their message out on the World Wide Web. And most transactions are going to happen on the web.

Copilot and Gemini are progenies of Bing and Google, two popular search engines. To provide the best results, they will most likely use SEO algorithms, along with LLM, NLP, and Neural Networks. So SEO is here to stay!

Will AI Replace Search Engines?

It’s Copilot vs. Bing and Gemini vs. Google now.

Based on my observations and personal experiences with AI, this whole conversation of AI vs. Search Engines or Copilot vs. Bing and Gemini vs. Google should rather be AI Assistant + Search Engine or Copilot + Bing or Gemini + Google. Copilot is Bing’s opportunity to gain new users, Gemini is Google’s chance to prove its mettle and show they are true information powerhouse.

Google currently has more than 93% of the search engine market share. If they make the right moves with Gemini, they can further strengthen their search engine market position. Bing has a small share of the search engine market with only 3%. With Copilot, Bing has the potential to capture current Google users and gain their loyalty.

AI is here to stay! Bing and Google may or may not have brought their own AI assistants, people were using ChatGPT.

It is best for them to bring their own AI assistants. This way, they will not lose users to ChatGPT or other AI tools. AI assistants are everything search engine is, plus an extra dose of Chemical X. Copilot and Gemini are here to make Bing and Google unbeatable.

The general public no longer wants to jump from site to site to find captions for their Insta post, an error in code, details of historical events, or such. But they would still like to analyze the results for sensitive information. Yes, people are going to use AI assistants more and more, but search engines are not going to become a mere relic of the past.

What Happens to Bing and Google as Search Engines Now?

Bing has already stepped up its game by integrating its AI assistant Chat into the search engine. It just takes a swipe/scrolls to switch between two. Google has also integrated Gemini functionalities into their several products but is yet to make it as seamless as Bing-Copilot integration.

Engineers from both Microsoft and Google have made development every day to make Copilot and Gemini usage more streamlined and less intimidating to the everyday, average user. The next step for both Google and Microsoft is to create a synchronous experience with Brower + Search Engine + AI Assistant, and right now, Microsoft has the upper hand with this seamless integration with Microsoft Edge + Bing + Copilot. But Google is also one update away from the same. And seeing their progress with Gemini, I’m hopeful.
